Facial contouring surgery modifies the shape, width, and ratio of the face by adjusting
Facial contouring surgery includes cheekbone reduction, square jaw reduction and genioplasty.
Depending on the patient’s facial features, and conditions, Facial liposuction,
facelift, and sunken cheek correction are the procedures that may be recommended with facial contouring surgery to create a synergistic effect.

A well-developed square jaw can make the face appear wider and give a more rugged appearance. Square jaw reduction surgery involves contouring the entire jawline, including the prominent and enlarged square jaw. The procedure is typically performed in two stages.
The first step is square jaw resection surgery, which involves directly removing the prominent and enlarged jaw angle. The second step is lateral cortical bone shaving, which reduces the thickness of the jawbone for a more refined contour.
Excessive square jaw resection can lead to an unnatural or artificial appearance. Therefore, preserving a portion of the jaw angle below the ear is crucial. Additionally, lateral cortical bone shaving should be carefully performed to achieve a slim and smooth jawline when viewed from the front
Incision site
There are no visible scars, as the procedure is performed through an incision inside the mouth.
Surgery method
1. The standard square jaw surgery technique
Only a portion of the square jaw is resected, including the
square jaw below the ear.Lateral cortical bone shaving is performed only on the square
jaw area below the ears.2. Braun’s square jaw surgery method
Resection of the square jaw to the side of the chin without the formation of a secondary angle.
Lateral cortical bone shaving is performed on the entire jaw bone.
Square jaw muscles(masseter muscles) reduction via high frequency nerve block.
At Braun Plastic Surgery, lateral cortical shaving is performed not only on the angular part of the square jaw, but
Furthermore, it reduces the square jaw muscles through nerve block, resulting in a smoother and more effectively
reduced jawline.
The general square jaw surgery method
Braun’s square jaw surgery method
There are two major factors that affect the outcome of square jaw reduction surgery.
First, the bone must be resected while leaving an appropriate amount of the square jaw below the ears.
If the square jawbone below the ears is excessively resected, it can result in an artificial and unnatural-looking jawline.
After evaluating factors such as the degree of jaw development, the position of the ears and lips, gender, ethnicity, and
individual preferences, the amount of bone reduction is carefully determined—typically ranging from 1.5 cm to 4 cm.
Second, a slim shape from the frontal view is essential for successful square angle surgery. To achieve such a frontal effect,
lateral cortical bone shaving surgery must be done to thin out the outer surface of the jaw bone.
Lateral cortical bone shaving is an important and effective method that determines a successful outcome of square jaw reduction
depending on which area and how much it is performed.
However, in many cases, lateral cortical bone shaving is not performed due to a lack of awareness about its importance. Even when its significance is recognized,
only a minimal amount of shaving is often done, which is insufficient to effectively refine and slim the jawline.
At Braun Plastic Surgery, lateral cortical bone shaving is performed not only on the angular portion of the square jaw,
but also along the area beneath the ears near the salivary glands, as well as the convex region beside the lips.
This comprehensive approach reduces the entire jawline as seen from the front and smooths out uneven contours,
effectively creating a slimmer and more refined appearance. With this technique, the width of the jawbone can be reduced by
approximately 3 mm to 10 mm on each side.
Lastly, the jaw line can be even more enhanced by reducing the developed square jaw muscles with a high frequency nerve block.
Skin sagging along the sides of the mouth (commonly referred to as jowls) may occur after square jaw surgery. However, it is less likely to happen compared to cheekbone reduction surgery, as the neck muscles naturally provide elastic support to the jawline.
If you have good skin elasticity, minimal facial fat, and thicker skin, square jaw surgery typically does not result in sagging.
However, if you already have mild skin sagging before surgery or have poor skin elasticity, it is recommended to undergo square jaw surgery in combination with a facelift to help prevent postoperative sagging.
Blood can leak from places such as the nostrils during cheek bone surgery. However, there is no such place in jaw angle surgery for the blood to leak out.
It is recommended that you stay in Korea for 13 days. But depending on your situation, you may be able to leave the country after 5 to 7 days; in this case, you’ll have to get your stitches removed in your home country.
Since the chief anesthesiologist is present in the hospital to closely monitor the entire procedure, it is safe to undergo multiple surgeries at once.
You should wait at least 6 months to a year to see the full results, but you can already see improved results 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.
All surgeries carry the risk of complications. In the case of a jaw angle surgery, the location of the nerve line is crucial. That is why it is critical to have surgery performed by a skilled surgeon.
We advise to avoid eating chewy food, having extreme sports for 2months.
Wearing braces during surgery is not a problem. However, because opening the mouth wide after surgery is uncomfortable, you shouldn’t receive orthodontic treatment for 2 to 3 months.
After surgery, eat soft foods like porridge for about a week and avoid very hard foods for 1 to 2 months.
There are no visible scars because the incision is inside the mouth.
It's more uncomfortable than painful. Painkillers are prescribed because each person experiences pain differently.
There will be no problem boarding a plane 5-7days after surgery.
All surgeries carry the risk of swelling, scarring, infection, and bleeding. This may differ depending on the patient's physical condition and post-surgery care. However, if the surgery is decided after extensive consultation with an experienced specialist, the risk of side effects is greatly reduced.
