What is Square Jaw Reduction?

A well-developed square jaw can make a person’s face look bigger and give them arugged appearance. Square jaw reduction surgery involves trimming the entire jaw line, including the large and developed square jaw. The procedure for square jaw surgery is divided into two steps.

The first stepis a square jaw resection surgery that directly removes the large and developed jaw angle. The second stepis a lateral cortical bone shaving that reduces the thickness of the jaw.

Excessive square jaw resection can result in an unnatural and artificial shape, thus, leaving a jaw angle below the ear is very important. Andthelateral cortical bone shaving should be properly done to achieveaslim and soft jawline from the frontview.

also on the entire area of the salivary glands below the ears and the convex part on the side of the lips without the
formation of secondary angles, effectively reducing the entire jawline from the front and improving the bumpy

There are two major factors that affect the outcome of square jaw reduction surgery. First, the bone must be resected while leaving an appropriate amount of the square jaw below the ears.

If the square jaw bone below the ears is overly resected, it may result in an artificial and unnatural lookingjawline. After considering factors such as theamount of development of the square jaw angle, location of the ear and lips, gender, race, and individual preferences, the amountofreduction is determined variously within 1.5cm to 4cm.

Second, a slim shape from the frontal view is essentialfor successful square angle surgery.To achieve such a frontal effect, lateral cortical bone shaving surgery must be done to thin out the outer surface of the jaw bone. Lateral cortical bone shaving is an important and effective method that determines a successful outcome of square jaw reduction depending on which area and how much it is performed.

Yet, lateral cortical bone shaving is not performed in most cases because it is not aware of the importance of the procedure. Although even if it is aware, only a small amount of shaving is performed and the jawline cannot be effectively sharpened in this case.

At Braun Plastic Surgery, lateral cortical bone shaving is performed not only on the angular part of the square jaw, but also on the entire area of the salivary glands below the ears and the convex part on the side of the lips, reducing the entire jawline from the front and improving the bumpy outline, effectively creating a slimmer and more refined jawline. Through lateral cortical bone shaving, the width of the jaw bone can be reduced to 3mm~10mm for each side.

Lastly, the jaw line can be even more enhanced by reducing the developed square jaw muscles with a high frequency nerve block.

Skin Sagging Following Square Jaw Surgery and Its Correction

Skin sagging on the side of the lips->(jowl?) may occur after the square jaw surgery.However, it is less likely to occur than cheekbone reduction surgery because the neck muscles elastically wrap and hold the entire jaw.

If you have good skin elasticitywithout a lot of fat and a thick skin on the face, square jaw surgery will not cause sagging skin.

However, if you have some skin sagging prior to surgery or don’t have good skin elasticity, it is recommended that you have square jaw surgery and face lift surgery at the same time in order to prevent skin sagging.

Why is blood drainage maintained after the surgery?

Blood can leak from places such as the nostrils during cheek bone surgery. However, there is no such place in jaw angle surgery for the blood to leak out.

When can I depart Korea after surgery?

It is recommended that you stay in Korea for 13 days. But depending on your situation, you may be able to leave the country after 5 to 7 days; in this case, you’ll have to get your stitches removed in your home country.

Is it safe to proceed with other surgeries together?

Since the chief anesthesiologist is present in the hospital to closely monitor the entire procedure, it is safe to undergo multiple surgeries at once.

When will I see my result?

You should wait at least 6 months to a year to see the full results, but you can already see improved results 2 to 3 weeks after surgery.

Are there any long-term side effects from this surgery?

All surgeries carry the risk of complications. In the case of a jaw angle surgery, the location of the nerve line is crucial. That is why it is critical to have surgery performed by a skilled surgeon.

What are the things to consider once I get home?

We advise to avoid eating chewy food, having extreme sports for 2months.

Can I have surgery while wearing braces?

Wearing braces during surgery is not a problem. However, because opening the mouth wide after surgery is uncomfortable, you shouldn’t receive orthodontic treatment for 2 to 3 months.

Can I eat hard foods after surgery?

After surgery, eat soft foods like porridge for about a week and avoid very hard foods for 1 to 2 months.

Is there any visible scarring?

There are no visible scars because the incision is inside the mouth.

Is the surgery process painful?

It's more uncomfortable than painful. Painkillers are prescribed because each person experiences pain differently.

Will there be any problem boardinga plane?

There will be no problem boarding a plane 5-7days after surgery.

What are the side effects of facial contouring surgery?

All surgeries carry the risk of swelling, scarring, infection, and bleeding. This may differ depending on the patient's physical condition and post-surgery care.However, if the surgery is decided after extensive consultation with an experienced specialist, the risk of side effects is greatly reduced.
